Welcome to 1st grade! I am Sheila Svenson, and I am very excited to be your child's teacher this year!  I have been teaching for over 10 years and have spent most of my teaching career in early childhood programs. The 2025-2026 school year was my first year at New River Elementary as the first-grade teacher. First grade is an exciting time of learning. I love teaching and seeing the a-ha moments when students learn something new. With my background in early childhood education, I understand the importance of social-emotional development and of best practices for helping young students thrive in the classroom. My goal is to make learning fun and encourage students to develop a love of learning. I have been married for 20 years, and we have a son and a daughter. Our son is going to NAU, and our daughter will be starting her senior year in 2026. We also have three fur babies. A hound dog, a cat, and a hamster. The hamster was a class pet and may visit the students on occasion. In my free time, I love being in nature, collecting rocks, or taking pictures. First grade is a crucial time of development for children, and my goal is to encourage them. Family also plays a crucial role in students' lives, and I strive to build a community with families to ensure students receive full support from home and school. We are a team in your child’s educational journey. I look forward to building a partnership with you and your student.
